While many consider Fallout New Vegas to be the superior game, Bethesda’s first foray into the post-apocalyptic world helped revitalize the series, which began as isometric titles on the PC. However, as beloved as the third entry is, one thing that has probably stuck in a lot of people’s minds over the years is the green filter that covers the world. As it turns out, it’s not just the players who noticed just how glaring it can be, as the studio itself was well aware of how green the game was.

In a recent video, a number of people from Bethesda, including Director Todd Howard himself, revealed that the team would engage in lengthy discussions about the infamous tint in Fallout 3. The short clip opens with Howard saying that there have been a lot of disputes when it comes to color in the series, such as what type of blue the vault suits should be. He goes on to say that the green in the third game was top of the debate list.

The green of the PipBoy, which Howard describes as “electric green,” is one notable example, as is the entirety of the HUD. The green tint that accompanies the rest of the color scheme was a way to add a “harmonious” look to the rest of the game. Fortunately, at least to some players, the developer dialed it back for the follow-up.

So infamous is the filter that there is even a mod for Fallout 3 that reduces all that green. While it certainly gave the game its distinctive look, it’s obviously been enough of an eyesore to some people that they felt the need to remove the tint.

The Fallout series celebrated turning 25 recently, with the modern games becoming a staple in the AAA industry. Some entries are better than others, but overall the franchise is hugely successful. What the fifth game will be like is anyone’s guess at this stage, but hopefully there will be some lovely tints to go with it.

Fallout 3 is available now on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
