The quality of the football on offer at Seville’s Benito Villamarin stadium on Friday was hardly inspiring. But the Betis faithfuls were content for their side to grind out a win in a chippy contest that saw the referee hand out 10 yellow cards, reports Efe.

Both teams looked tentative at the start of the contest, coming alive only after the 20-minute mark.

The goal came in the 25th minute, when Betis’ Joaquin Sanchez put his head to a perfect cross from Musonda.

Malaga was quick to respond, generating three chances in five minutes, but the closest they came to scoring was a shot that hit the post.

The victory vaulted Betis into eighth place in La Liga, with eight points. Malaga, with five points, sit in the 16th spot.
