Fans who have tuned in to Better Call Saul from day one probably knew something like this was coming seeing how the show has brought back most of its predecessors’ most prominent characters to varying degrees over the years from the very beginning. While the show centers around the backstory of Saul Goodman, Mike Ehrmantraut, and Gus Fring, major Breaking Bad characters such as Hector Salamanca, Tuco Salamanca, and, most recently, Hank Schrader have made guest appearances.

Over the weekend, the show’s official Twitter account posted a picture of White and Pinkman in a still from Breaking Bad. The caption simply stated, “They’re coming back. #BetterCallSaul.” Considering that Better Call Saul is giving the backstory for how everything came to be in Breaking Bad, it should be no surprise that everyone’s favorite meth partnership will have their own cameo, as they too need their connection to their show’s prequel.
This will be Cranston and Paul’s first appearances as their iconic characters since the Breaking Bad movie El Camino, which was released on Netflix all the way back in the fall of 2019. It fits that they would be coming back, seeing how they first knew about Saul Goodman through Pinkman’s original partner, Emilio, who, according to Pinkman, had been arrested multiple times before Goodman got him off every time. Odds are, that’s how the show will re-introduce at least Pinkman. White may be re-introduced more or less in a flashback.
As exciting as it is to know that they’re coming back, one can’t help but wonder how they’re going to make those two look as young as they did when they first played the characters. It’s been almost ten years since Breaking Bad ended, and even when those two came back for El Camino six years later, they definitely looked like they had aged a bit since the show ended. Better Call Saul has done about as good a job as they could in making Bob Odenkirk and Giancarlo Esposito look younger but haven’t had as much luck with say Jonathan Banks. Whether they can pull off making Cranston and Paul look younger won’t hurt their performance in any way, but it could be a distraction.
No matter how it turns out, bringing those two back for Better Call Saul’s final season feels like the cherry on top of what has been a phenomenal series. Back in 2015, many were skeptical that Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould could catch lightning in a bottle twice, especially with all the praise and accolades Breaking Bad received. Now, seven years later, Better Call Saul has done so well critically that not only has it been put in the same league as its predecessor, but some fans are claiming that the prequel is the superior show between the two. While that’s probably recency bias talking, the fact still remains that Better Call Saul has exceeded expectations. And, to tie it all in the bow, they’re going to give us one last callback to the show that started it all before pulling the curtains.
Better Call Saul season 6 will debut on April 18th, 2022, on AMC.
